Halloween came early this year for the OCG part since they're going to be trick-or-treated by the new cutesy archetype, the Ghostricks in the next booster pack, Shadow Specters. Trick-or-treat anyone?
The archetype is the Halloween version of Madolche, they are cute and adorable, and just like those cupcakes, they to have a common effect that defines the archetype; "This card cannot be Normal Summoned unless you have a Ghostrick monster.(But can be Normal Set). Once per turn: You can set this card to face-down defense position." Base from that, you're thinking right now that they're slow right? Well, I wouldn't argue with you since that's what I thought of at first glance also.
The archetype consists of 3 levels right now, 1, 2 and 3. Base from those level, you know they have weak stats and guess what, you're right, they indeed have weak stats for the format, but they're still cute though. Each level has 2 monsters each and a type. Level 1 has Fiends, level 2 are Spellcasters and level 3 are Zombies. They also have an Xyz monster named Alucard, and if you've been playing Castlevania, you should know by now that Alucard is Dracula spelled backward.
The level 1s are Special Summonable from the hand so they're going to be your east ticket for fulfilling the condition to Normal Summon the other Ghostricks. Lantern can be Special Summoned when an opponent monster attacks directly or attacks a Ghostrick and negates the attack. Specter can be Special Summoned when a Ghostrick is sent to the grave via battle or effect, and you get to draw a card. Plus, their effects can be activated more than once each turn.
The level 2s are the cards that changes your opponent's monster to face-down defense position. Witch changes one of your opponent's monster to face-down defense position once per turn while Yuki-onna changes them when she is sent to the grave by battle and locks them in that position. This level is by far the lesser level since I think the other levels have better effects, but still, the level 2s pave ways for the archetype to direct attack.
Lastly, the level 3s searches the cards from the deck to your hand. Jiangshi searches the monsters when it is flipped face-up, while Stein searches the spell and traps every time it inflicts battle damage. They are the monsters you're going to use to summon Alucard.
And finally, Alucard, a Rank 3 generic Xyz that prevents your opponent from attacking Ghostricks and face-down monsters. It also has the ability to add a Ghostrick card from the grave to the hand when it is sent to the grave. And it can also destroy set cards.
Just like the Madolches, they too have a Field that compliments their uniqueness. Ghostrick House allows a player to direct attack their opponent when their opponent only has face-down monsters but can only receive half the damage except from Ghostrick cards and effect damages. This is their main strategy to inflict damage and can lead to an OTK if you have 3 Alucards and 2 Stein on the field for 8600 damage plus the searches, but what are the odds of that happening.
So, there's only one question left, how do you summon them? Ghostrick House may be able to protect them but it is not like you have it every time. And they also have weak DEF with only 1800 as the highest that wouldn't let them stay for long.
The only answers I have right now is using Box of Friends from TCG's Number Hunter that Special Summons 2 monsters with 0 DEF or ATK from the deck. You can call out 2 Steins with this and inflict damage directly if the chance is given to search for spell and traps, or you can Xyz Summon Alucard already.
Of course, I'm not going to forget Allure of Darkness since they're all dark, and Recurring Nightmare since the level 1s and Stein has 0 DEF. Recurring Nightmare allows you to reuse the level 1 hand traps all over again for quick monster presence.
I've been thinking of using Book of Life since the level 3s are the monsters I want and Alucard is also a Zombie. Or perhaps Call of the Mummy to Special a level 3 then Normal another level 3 so I can go for Alucard quickly.
